Acting Dean, Faculty of Music
Professor Ryan McClelland’s appointment as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Music was extended to December 31, 2024, while the current Dean, Professor Ellie Hisama, participates in a fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey during a six-month administrative leave. Professor McClelland was appointed Acting Dean on November 1, 2023. Professor McClelland has served as the Faculty of Music’s Associate Dean, Academic and Student Affairs since 2013.
Professor McClelland’s research interests include rhythmic-metric theory, tonal analysis, and performance studies. He has published on these subjects in journals including Music Theory Spectrum and Music Analysis, as well as in essay collections devoted to Brahms and Schubert. Author of a monograph on Brahms’s music and a co-authored analysis textbook, he recently co-edited the Cambridge Companion to Rhythm.
Professor McClelland received his MMus in piano performance and his PhD in music theory from Indiana University, where he also served for two years as a Visiting Lecturer. He joined the University of Toronto in 2004 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2015.
