Professor Karin Ruhlandt was appointed Vice-Principal (Academic) & Dean, University of Toronto Scarborough beginning July 2024 for a five-year term. Professor Ruhlandt also joined the University at the rank of Professor in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences.
Professor Ruhlandt joins the University of Toronto Scarborough from Syracuse University where she was a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Dean Emerita. At Syracuse she served in various roles including Chair of the Department of Chemistry, and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, the University’s largest College. Under her leadership, the College spearheaded initiatives to support the student experience, implemented the College’s first academic strategic plan, and raised the College’s research profile.
Professor Ruhlandt is an internationally recognized expert within the field of inorganic chemistry. Her research is focused on main group and lanthanide chemistry and X-ray crystallography, for which she has earned multiple grants and awards, including a Fulbright Fellowship and the National Science Foundation Career award. Professor Ruhlandt received her PhD in chemistry from Philipps-Universität Marburg in Germany. Following postdoctoral work at the University of California, Davis she was appointed Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Syracuse University, where she was later appointed Distinguished Professor.
