Professor Keil joined the Faculty of Arts & Science in 1992 and is now Professor of History & Cinema Studies and, since 2015, Principal of Innis College. As a faculty member in the Cinema Studies Institute, and Director of the Institute from 2007-2014, Professor Keil has been instrumental in several curricular development processes. Under Professor Keil’s tenure as Director, the Cinema Studies Institute became an EDU-A, and he led the successful efforts to create the MA and PhD programs in Cinema Studies, and spearheaded the renewal of the undergraduate curriculum.

Professor Keil is a leader in improving the student experience through teaching and curricular innovation. He was the driving force behind the First Year Foundation Pilot at Innis College (now known as FYF@Innis). This curated and extremely popular series of first-year foundational courses across the arts and sciences work together to prepare students for university education, and to create an interdisciplinary and cross-departmental community of practice for faculty and instructors. In leading this initiative, Professor Keil has had a profound influence on Innis College, building robust communities for teaching and learning.

A recipient of the Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award in 2015 and the Distinguished Pedagogy Award by the Society for Cinema and Media Studies in 2019, Professor Keil has also seen his teaching excellence recognized in strong course evaluations and student feedback. Highly regarded as a mentor by both students and fellow faculty, he has published widely on cinema and media studies pedagogy, including two edited volumes specifically intended for undergraduate teaching.
